Email Campaign UTM Tracking
Tag a newsletter consistently, compare placements, and test email-provider rewrites without exposing subscribers.

Plan the comparison before building links
Consider a newsletter announcing a ceramics class. It has a header button and a link inside the article. To compare those placements, keep source=studio_digest, medium=email, and campaign=class_oct26 on both. Change only the content field.
For a later reminder email, choose whether it is a new initiative or another send in the same initiative. One workable policy keeps campaign stable and uses reminder_header for content. Write down that choice so a second editor does not silently choose a different reporting model.
Header: https://example.com/class?utm_source=studio_digest&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=class_oct26&utm_content=header_button Article: https://example.com/class?utm_source=studio_digest&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=class_oct26&utm_content=article_link
Test the delivered email, not just the draft
Email platforms may wrap links for click measurement. Send a test using your normal preview workflow and inspect the destination reached by each campaign button. Check whether the platform also appends its own campaign parameters, creating conflicting duplicate values.
Keep unsubscribe and account-management links under the email provider’s control. They can contain recipient-specific tokens. Do not paste those URLs into a campaign example or use them as a reusable destination.
Interpret the result with the right denominator
An email-provider click count and an analytics session count measure different things. A label cannot make those totals identical. Keep the source of each metric visible in reports and investigate unexpected changes using both systems.
UTMCraft does not identify recipients or measure conversions. Do not insert a subscriber’s email, name, or customer ID into utm_content to work around that limitation. Use anonymous creative labels such as article_link that are shared by everyone receiving the same version.
Before you publish
- Hold campaign identity constant when comparing placements.
- Inspect test-send links after provider rewrites.
- Avoid duplicate tags from both your builder and email platform.
- Keep recipient identifiers out of campaign values.
